Project Overview

An exhaust system failure was reported on a General Electric MS 5001 Gas Turbine. The team was invited to conduct a root cause analysis, determine the cause of the failure, and resolve it. The thermal wall of the exhaust system was found to be severely damaged, and the unit was due for a Hot Gas Path Inspection (HGPI). The following parts were replaced: combustion cans, liners and retainers, transition piece, first-stage nozzles and shroud blocks, and second-stage nozzles and shroud blocks. Turbine clearances were measured. The HGPI was successfully completed, resolving the unit's legacy issue of high wheelspace temperature which previously limited to 15 MW, but upon completion of the project the Unit was restored to base load operation.
